A Few Things That Can Go Wrong

Although we’ll check your vehicle’s braking system before making a definitive diagnosis about brake repair, we can share a few of the more common things that go wrong.  The most frequent brake repair, of course, is brake pad replacement.  While these are somewhat durable, they do eventually wear out.  Once they’re too thin, you’ll likely hear squealing as you apply brakes.  Your ability to stop will become compromised without a brake pad exchange.  Another problem might be a brake fluid leak.  There are several places where this can occur.  Since the fluid travels through hoses, a small hole in one of these lines can allow for a drip.  Also, the brake fluid is stored in the master cylinder until it’s forced through the lines.  It then goes to a smaller cylinder at each wheel.  A cracked or otherwise damaged cylinder can also allow fluid to escape.  A significant fluid loss is dangerous because the braking system works using hydraulics.  An insufficient fluid level translates into the loss of braking ability.  Another potential problem is a stuck brake caliper, the component that moves the brake pad into place against the drum/rotor to make the stop.  Sometimes a braking issue is as simple as human error when the driver forgets to disengage the emergency brake.  Both the stuck caliper and driving with the engaged emergency brake can cause a detectable burning odor.
